SEATTLE – Hace apenas un mes, los Padres de San Diego difícilmente habrían ganado un partido como el del martes. Pero el equipo ha cambiado, y mucho, desde que A.J. Preller realizó una serie de movimientos agresivos justo antes de la Fecha Límite de Cambios del 31 de julio.
Esa transformación se hizo evidente en el triunfo 7-6 sobre los Marineros en el T-Mobile Park, gracias al impacto directo de sus nuevas incorporaciones: un grand slam y un doble del dominicano Ramón Laureano, dos hits de Ryan O’Hearn, un toque sorpresa productor del venezolano Freddy Fermín y un séptimo inning en blanco lanzado por el “lanzallamas” Mason Miller.
Ninguno de ellos era parte del equipo hace un mes. Ahora, San Diego presume una de las alineaciones más profundas de toda la liga.
“No hay duda de eso, esta es la alineación más profunda en la que he estado”, afirmó Laureano.
La profundidad no solo se nota en el lineup, sino también en el bullpen. La llegada de Miller ha transformado una unidad ya fuerte en un grupo capaz de controlar situaciones de alta presión.
“Tienes las piezas todos los días”, explicó el manager Mike Shildt.
Los Padres comenzaron dominando con un 5-0 tras el grand slam de Laureano en la primera entrada. El abridor Dylan Cease retiró a los primeros 11 bateadores antes de permitir un jonrón de tres carreras de Randy Arozarena. Posteriormente, Jason Adam entró en relevo pero permitió otro cuadrangular de tres anotaciones, esta vez cortesía de Eugenio Suárez, lo que volteó el marcador a favor de Seattle.
Pero San Diego respondió rápido. Jake Cronenworth empató con un sencillo impulsor en la sexta, y el toque sorpresa de Fermín marcó el 7-6 definitivo.
“Nos dieron una cachetada ahí en la baja del quinto”, dijo Cronenworth. “Y respondimos de inmediato… Eso es lo que somos”.
En el bullpen, Adrián Morejón dominó con tres ponches en la sexta; Miller se encargó de la séptima frente a la parte alta del orden; Estrada colgó el cero en la octava; y Robert Suárez logró su 35º rescate en la novena. Ese tipo de profundidad es rara. Muy pocos equipos pueden contar con cinco brazos confiables para cerrar juegos.
Además de Miller, los Padres sumaron al abridor cubano Néstor Cortés, JP Sears en el fondo de la rotación y Will Wagner como utility. En la ofensiva, Laureano, O’Hearn y Fermín han encajado a la perfección.
“Nos hace un equipo completo”, aseguró Cronenworth.
A pesar de la magnitud de los cambios, la adaptación fue casi inmediata.
“Parece como si hubieran estado aquí todo el año”, dijo Cronenworth.
“Han sido extraordinarios. No podríamos pedir un mejor grupo de muchachos”.
Shildt elogió el trabajo del staff fuera del campo, desde logística para familias hasta la cultura de bienvenida del clubhouse:
